Abstract:

The Lake Placid Center for Music, Drama and Art, dedicated one year ago, was built on the achievements of its predecessor, the Lake Placid Playhouse and utilizes the same management. Lake Placid Playhouse over its nine year life demonstrated an average annual growth of 15 percent. Visitors to the Center accounted for over a $1 million dollar economic impact to the area; although it must be recognized that the Center, in most cases, is but one of the community's major attractions. It is virtually impossible to allocate among the leading attractions the combined economic impact of the tourist or visitor. The local expenditures of the Center including a $125,000 payroll were about $325,000 for 1973. New York State as a direct or indirect result of the Center's first year of operation accrued almost $50,000 or about 72 percent of its original 1973 grant to the Lake Placid Center for Music, Drama and Art.

The economic impact was determined on the basis of a week long survey of visitors to the Center. Forty-six percent of the week's visitors responded. This week included operatic, concert and theatre performances. This survey allowed detailed analysis of all Center visitors during the summer season. In addition expenditures by the Center were considered. 45% of all Center admissions were tourists while only 21% were Lake Placid residents. The rest were divided between vacation-home owners and other northern New York residents. The request for this economic impact study was made by the New York State Council on the Arts which makes a grant to the Lake Placid Center to assist with operations. (Highlights).
