Abstract:

From its inception, this study has had two basic purposes: to survey the status of labor relations in some of the performing arts, and to identify existing and possible future problem areas that will be of interest to scholars as well as managers, trustees, union leaders, performers and community leaders. This study does not purport to be a definitive analysis of labor relations in the performing arts. Rather, it is an attempt to take the first step into an area that needs considerable further exploration. Hopefully, others will be inspired to investigate specific aspects of this broad and complex field.

It was decided to limit the study to the live performing arts, specifically theatre, symphony, dance, opera, and choral groups. All of these sectors are nonprofit except for the commercial theatre. Although this book focuses on the live performing arts exclusively, television and film were included in the description of the economic structure in Chapter I to put the performing arts in perspective. Most figures included in this survey are for the years 1967 and earlier. No attempt has been made to update these statistics.
