Abstract:

Proceedings of the conference sponsored by Pennsylvania State University, College of Arts and Architecture and College of Business Administration in cooperation with the National Endowment for the Arts. Held at Pennsylvania State University, College Park, Pennsylvania, April 29--May 1, 1976.

The theme of the Conference, The Key to Effective Trusteeship of Arts Organizations, stresses the concept of trusteeship, with special focus on the role of the chairman, the importance and seriousness of his challenge, and the conversion of that challenge into effective leadership. We consider this conference as an innovative first step in a wider effort which will encompass the whole area of trusteeship, its problems, its opportunities and its responsibilities. As such, it represents both an important experiment and a significant learning experience.

In addition to this exchange of ideas and experiences, the conference was designed to provide focus for further study and development, to encourage vision and imagination in trusteeship, to identify needed research information, and, very importantly, to provide material for this first volume, an authoritative report on arts management beginning at the top.
