Abstract:
This issue is devoted to intellectual property and the arts, a complex topic of increasing importance.
In his introduction, the author clearly outlines the four areas that comprise the field of intellectual property. They are:
- patents;
- registered industrial designs;
- trademarks; and
- tcopyrights.
Pertaining to the arts, he comments that there are four primary disciplines defined by a mode of expression which are :
- literary (written word);
- media (recorded or broadcast sound and/or image);
- performing (live stage); and
- visual (images and shapes).
Furthermore, he explains the five levels of artistic appreciation:
- amateur art (marriage of self-actualization and aesthetic values);
- applied art (marriage of aesthetic and utilitarian values);
- entertainment art (marriage of aesthetic and amusement values);
- fine art or art for arts sake (marriage of aesthetic and enlightenment values); and
- heritage art (marriage of aesthetic and scarcity values).
