Abstract:

This issue presents an array of articles that discuss the cultural transformation wrought by the democratization of several formerly Communist regimes: Russia, Uzbekistan, Slovenia, Poland, and East Germany. The democratization of cultural production has been met with less than an uncritically enthusiastic response from many in the cultural sector.
