Summary:

Abstract:

This issue presents an array of articles that discuss the cultural transformation wrought by the democratization of several formerly Communist regimes: Russia, Uzbekistan, Slovenia, Poland, and East Germany. The democratization of cultural production has been met with less than an uncritically enthusiastic response from many in the cultural sector. As these articles document, there has been a wide range of responses to the prospect of the desetatisation of culture.
