Abstract:

Appropriate structures are being set up, and networks are being organized for the collection and dissemination of documentation. Research and decision-making are no longer undertaken without a system of information which is becoming more and more refined. If one considers the growing importance of research work in the field of cultural development and the assistance it can give to those responsible for cultural action, no efforts should be spared to make possible and intensify the circulation of the precise, specialized and up-to-date information. In this way dialogue between research workers and with those responsible for cultural policies will be facilitated. (Preface).

Our primary concern was to construct a documentation language, in other words, an instrument for the processing of information contained in documents so as to ensure its acquisition, storage and retrieval. This thesaurus is accordingly presented as a tool designed to serve a purely practical purpose: it does not claim to throw light on the substance of cultural development problems, nor, of course, on the intentions which underlie cultural action or govern the implementation of programmes. The [thesaurus] comprises about three thousand descriptors linked together by different types of semantic relationships and arranged by subject fields illustrating the main aspects of cultural development.
