Summary:
By presenting us with three arts & social justice organizations, and by asking pressing and provocative questions such as how we can "instutitionalize innovation" beyond a single project or group, EmcArts shows us the cross section between the arts and justice, and allows us to see how the arts can and need to create lasting change.
Abstract:
These case studies by EmcArts present us with three arts and social justice groups: their motivations, structures and programs. By looking into the influences and strategies of Alternate ROOTS, Jane Adams Hull-House Museum and The Theater Offensive, EmcArts shows us how the arts are not just a reflection of the times and conditions in which they are created, but can become a necessary tool for responding to our social, political and environmental conditions. They tell us that the arts can be a meaningful catalyst for change for artists themselves as well as for greater "movement moments."
