On the Impact of Revenue Subsidies on Repertory Theatre Policy

Author: Austen-Smith, David

Publication Year: 1979

Media Type: Report

Summary:

Abstract:

The author examines the impact of subsidies on theatre policy in Britain in the fiscal year 1974/5. Findings indicate that subsidies discourage high levels of activity, but quantitatively this effect is small. Further, subsidies encourage the presentation of relatively higher levels of minority interest plays, and the quantitative impact is large. Indeed, the regression results suggest that without subsidies virtually no minority interest plays would be staged.
