Summary:

This essay by Naj Wikoff from the book Managing Arts Program in Healthcare focuses the need for programs to assist military personnel and their families in healing and how the arts offer effective solutions to help in the process of healing military experiences.

Abstract:

"The arts offer effective toolkits and processes for healing military experiences, and have done so throughout human history. Yet they are not used easily or embraced with open arms by many who could benefit most from them. Developing a practical framework for using the arts to support psychological, social, and spiritual healing for American active-duty and veteran military personnel and their families requires appreciation of the differences between miltary and civilian culture, and particulars of the past and present-day military and vetran experience, and the sometimes profound changes undergone by service personnel who join the military and return as veterans. This chapter offers a content-based view of the realities of today's active-duty and veteran military personnel, with practical suggestions for making the arts available and valued in this milieu."
