Abstract:

The rate of attrition for Hispanic students continues to be high. Too few survive the undergraduate years and even fewer successfully complete graduate degrees.

In music, there are other impediments to the successful pursuit of academic degrees besides the general cultural problems faced by Hispanics in higher education. The source of some of these difficulties in advanced degree granting institutions in the lies in the nature of most music programs. Many of these evolved out of a model which looked at music as a necessary cultural refinement rather than as a humanistic study or a study of specialized human behavior. (p. 33-37)
