Summary:
This working paper is an attempt to produce a more accurate picture than has been available hitherto of the division of the Arts expenditure between the regions of England. (preface) The author makes the following conclusion: The subsidy per head resulting from the grants and guarantees distributed by the Arts Council in 1980-81 was nearly ten times as large for Londoners as it was East Anglians.
Abstract: This working paper is an attempt to produce a more accurate picture than has been available hitherto of the division of the Arts expenditure between the regions of England. (preface) The author makes the following conclusion: The subsidy per head resulting from the grants and guarantees distributed by the Arts Council in 1980-81 was nearly ten times as large for Londoners as it was East Anglians. It was three-and-a-halt times larger for those living in London and for those living in Merseyside (the second most favoured [favored] region,...) But such contrast oversimplify and exaggerate. The national companies accounted for 69% of the Arts Council's expenditure in Greater London, but even if the national companies were excluded from all the calculations Londoners receive more Arts council subsidy per head than people in any other region, twice as large as people in Yorkshire and more than three times as much as East Anglians.
