Abstract:

This working paper, a directory of humanities centers and institutes in the , had its origin in the daily work of The Foundation and the unexpected discovery that a category of research institutions existed in this country that had never been described collectively, although they exhibited many similarities in role and activities.

The major part of this volume consists of separate short articles on each center with a sketch of its general activities and information on its fellowship policies, facilities and special programs. Where possible, we have included the name of the director, as a service to those who wish information. We have also included a series of indexes to specialized centers, which follows the collection of articles.

Finally, you will find a discussion of the role and activities of centers, drawn from a transcript of a conference of center representatives held at The Rockefeller Foundation in 1976. The issues raised are still pertinent, and deserve to be dealt with more extensively by the scholars, writers and administrators who are actively engaged in establishing new patterns for humanities centers in our society.
