Abstract:

The community of artists and intellectuals that was formed in the Greenwich Village area during 1913 seemingly was based, in part, on interpersonal relationship created in the immediately preceding years. Apparently, some of these important relationships were established by artists and intellectuals as we have seen, in the course of completing ordinary everyday actions which were part of similar routines they followed daily. In eating supper at local restaurants, attending lectures, having late-night drinks, or just getting together with acquaintances, patterns of interaction later significant for community construction may have been fabricated. It is suggested here that, in our efforts to understand types of communities and how these spontaneously come into being, we might more closely look at such commonplace actions and their potential significance. In some instances, they may be dynamic preliminary phases of community construction. (Conclusion to the article)
