Abstract:

This book covers all types of giving to all sectors. The following information is from the chapter on giving to arts, culture and humanities. Americans contributed a record-breaking $3.35 billion to cultural institutions and organizations in 1981, an increase of 13.2 percent from the $2.96 billion they gave a year before. The American Association of Fund-Raising Counsel reported that as a portion of all philanthropy in 1981, giving to arts and humanities equalled 6.2 percent, the same as in the previous two years. The percentage gain made during the year meant that arts and other cultural organizations increased their contributions enough to offset eroding inflation, but the impressive rise did not signal an end to the nagging problems the cultural community faced. While for the most part cultural organizations appear to be holding their own better than any other segment in the philanthropic community as far as government cuts are concerned, small groups are suffering and even closing, while creativity is being limited to some degree. A study among members of the Independent Sector shows, for example, that some of the program cuts will result in less arts education provided for public school students by volunteers and while this has no immediate impact, it does have long-term implications.
