Abstract:

This book covers all types of giving to all sectors. The following information is from the chapter on giving to arts, culture and humanities. Contributions to organizations and institutions in the arts and humanities segment of the philanthropic community reached $2.70 billion in 1979, an increase of eight percent from 1978. The rise was less than the gain for total philanthropy in the , which the American Association of Fund-Raising Counsel said was 9.3 percent. And it was significantly below the inflation rate for the year - 13.3 percent - which means arts and humanities groups virtually lost ground last year. But the AAFRC said that the $2.70 billion represented a doubling of contributions to the arts and humanities in a period of just five years. In 1974, contributions to arts and humanities totaled $1.30 billion. The Association reported that contributions to arts and humanities in 1979 represented 6.2 percent of all philanthropy in America. As a portion of total giving, it has remained about the same since 1977, while in 1976 giving to arts and humanities represented a little over seven percent of all philanthropy. Most of the money contributed to arts and humanities organizations comes from individuals and the amounts they contribute -according to a number of samplings - is increasing. But there are increases, too, from other major sources of funding such as corporations, which appear to be taking a new interest in cultural organizations and from some foundations, which have increased both the number of grants made to arts and humanities groups and the amounts of those grants.
