Abstract:

This book covers all types of giving to all sectors. The following information is from the chapter on giving to arts, culture and humanities. Americans donated a total of $2.49 billion to charitable organizations concerned with arts and humanities last year, an increase of 8.0 percent from the revised total of $2.31 billion given in 1977. The American Association of Fund-Raising Counsel reported, however, that the increase in support did not match the gap between earned income and operating expenses. Most of the money donated each year to arts and humanities organizations comes from individual donors, the Association said, but there were increases reported by business organizations and foundations. A study of corporate contributions conducted by The Conference Board revealed that 814 American companies donated a total of $53,168,000 to cultural organizations, compared with a year earlier total of $42,173,000 donated by 773 companies. As a percent of total corporate giving, which was estimated by the AAFRC in 1978 to be at $2.00 billion, the donations made by the 814 companies equalled 9.0 percent. That was a climb from the 8.2 percent a year earlier. (p. 37).
