Abstract:

This book covers all types of giving to all sectors. The following information is from the chapter on giving to arts, culture and humanities. Americans contributed a total of $2.21 billion to arts and humanities organizations in 1977, an increase of 6.3 percent from the $2.08 billion donated in 1976, the American Association of Fund-Raising Counsel estimated. The large percentage increase was attributed by AAFRC to a revised method for estimating contributions made by individuals who do not itemize their deductions on federal income tax returns. The Association said that when this formula is used for revising past year figures, the percentage increase would probably lower since the prior year's total giving to arts and humanities, as well as other charitable categories receiving contributions from individuals would be revised upward. Individuals, business, and in some cases foundations, increased the giving to arts and humanities during the year, but funding from government sources continued to account for a major share of support. Cultural organizations, facing escalating costs to maintain theatres and museums, had an increase in attendance and a subsequent rise in earned income, primarily through ticket sales. During the past decade there has been a remarkable growth in the number of American cultural institutions. (p. 36)
