Abstract:

This book covers all types of giving to all sectors. The following information is from the chapter on giving to arts, culture and humanities. Demand for cultural activities, including museums, symphony and chamber orchestras, jazz and other music entities, opera, theatre, film, and the dance continued to expand during 1974. In a time when the economy is turning downward, it would appear that the arts take on greater importance in the lives of many. Support from private sources continued its upward trend during the year, and for 1974 is estimated at $1.28 billion, an increase of $80 million or 6.7 percent over 1973. Much of this growth can be attributed to increased giving by the average citizen, who has become more aware in recent years of the needs of the arts. Despite this surge in interest, many believe the condition of the arts has never been more precarious. Indeed, in 1974, inflated costs in some instances endangered a number of long-established organizations, and more than one recognized performing-arts entity were forced to close down, unable to raise the necessary funding. Established institutions are financially pressed, as new cultural organizations and performance groups appear on the scene and add their demands for the limited funds available. (p. 42)
