Abstract:

This study examines how general education reforms have impacted music majors at California State University , Fresno ( Fresno State). It focuses on the growing concern among music educators that institutions of higher learning are increasing the credit requirements in general education, thereby reducing the number of credits that could be spent in the study of music. This becomes all the more critical because, as noted by the author, most music students today do not have as deep a background in music as in the past.

Since the major is likely the primary reason a student has come to that particular place of learning, the author recommends that strategies be devised to address the goals of general education without compromising the major field of study. He recognizes that adjustments will have to be made in the content of each course serving a dual function in both the major and general education.
