This volume records a panel discussion from April 2001 about major issues in preservation policy and in public perceptions of national efforts to save the rich and diverse cultural traditions of our nation.
The panelists give an overview, historical analysis, and policy implications of cultural preservation. Participants included:
- Peter Brink of the National Trust for Historic Preservation;
- James Early from the Smithsonians Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage;
- Jack Meyers of the J. Paul Getty Trust; and
- Larry Reger from the Heritage Preservation.
The moderator was Ellen McCulloch-Lovell, a Fellow with the Center for Arts and Culture, and the former director of the White House Millennium Council.
Topics in the discussion included public perception of federal preservation efforts digital preservation, and issues of how to determine which traditions must be saved.
