Abstract:

The objectives of this book are

  1. to provide an operating framework for managers and board members so they can better understand the financial administration of the organization, as well as their individual roles and responsibilities for its programs and activities;
  2. to fill a serious gap in the educational and training needs of people who are involved in the management of small nonprofit organization; and
  3. to emphasize that understanding the financial management component of a small organization is critical to its well-being because this supports and strengthens the morale of those struggling to implement its purposes.

The scope of the material is broad but unifying. It shows financial planning as a derivative of careful activities planning, financial controls in terms of functions rather than authority, and financial integrity as a result of people doing different jobs in an organized and understandable way. Much of the confusion about this subject is dispelled in the book. As a result, readers will be prepared to deal with the financial management dimension of their jobs and thereby find their vital work more productive and challenging. (p.xi-xii).
