Abstract:

This document provides an overview of a June 16, 2003 presentation given by The Foundation Center and the New York Regional Association of Grantmakers (NYRAG) Family Foundation Trustees Peer Network on New York area family foundations, and New York area and U.S. foundations overall. Presentation highlights include:

New York Area Family Foundations
(Based on Grantmaker Data from 2000):

  • Due to the concentration of wealthy individuals in the area, New York family foundations accounted for more than half of all area foundations.
  • New York family foundations represented a smaller share of giving than U.S. family foundations overall.
  • Family involvement in family foundations decreases overtime.

New York Area Family Foundations Giving Patterns
(Based on Grantmaker Data from 2001):

  • Arts and culture received nearly one-quarter of New York family foundations giving dollars.
  • In the future, family foundations may shift their funding priorities due to a change in government funding.

New York Area and U.S. Foundations Overall
(Based on Grantmaker Data from 2001):

  • Between 2000 and 2001, the number of grantmaking foundations in the New York area increased by 8% and foundation giving rose by 10%.
  • Though it is predicted that overall foundation giving will decline in 2003, an economic turnaround would help to ensure a return to an increase in giving in the years ahead.
