Abstract:

Paper presented at First International Conference on Arts and Economics, sponsored by the Association for Cultural Economics, held in Edinburgh, Scotland, August 8-10, 1979. Comment by James L. Shanahan appears on p. 347-348.

This paper represents a preliminary exploration into a segment of the cultural and arts sector of the New York City economy. A more encompassing study contemplated by the authors involves an investigation into the full cultural and arts industry in New York. That study will embody the performing and nonperforming arts, as well as museums, galleries, and tourist attractions. The objective is to view economic activity within the industry as it is affected by and as it affects the health and vitality of New York City. The analytical process to test this interdependency is now feasible, thanks to the development of the New York Regional Econometric model. A forecasting as well as structural investigation of the industry is planned.

In the present paper we concentrate only on the Broadway theatre because of both our desire to test the feasibility of the full study and the encouraging assistance we received in obtaining advice and data concerning the Broadway theater from several individuals familiar with that theatre district in New York. (p. 333).
