Abstract:

Background paper prepared for the 46th American Assembly, of Columbia University, held at Arden, House, Harriman, New York, November 1974.

The author begins by summarizing the historical development and the fairly modern motivations of educational activity. He discusses the distinction between the work of art as object and document. Given this distinctions, he argues, the museum has educational responsibilities; its collections can educate in themselves. And yet, the museum is not primarily an educational institution. He analyses the tensions of educational goals and needs and museum mission and organization.
