Abstract:

New England's nonprofit arts industry, as measured by the expenditures and other economic activity in 1978 of 2,830 cultural organizations, is examined in this study. It demonstrates the important economic role of these arts organizations in a six-state region. The report provides information on each state, a comparative analysis and an overview of the entire region.

  • Connecticut's nonprofit arts industry, as measured by 574 cultural organizations:

    • Spent a total of $41.1 million which led to a total economic impact of
      $96.5 million within the state and $7 million in the rest of New England.
    • Provided 8,507 jobs.
    • Benefited from 1.7 million hours of volunteer work.
    • Had 5.6 million paid and unpaid admissions to events.
    • Returned $1.9 million in federal income taxes and $154,230 in state taxes.
