Abstract:
This book contains the results of three major studies of the New England arts economy:
- The same study of New England's nonprofit arts industry in 1978, as measured by 2,830 cultural organizations originally reported in The Arts and the New England Economy published in 1980.
- A study of the economic impact of arts education spending in New England's primary and secondary schools.
- A study of the economic impact of audience spending in New England.
Highlights of the Study for Massachusetts:
- The economic impact of direct and related spending by Massachusetts's nonprofit arts industry was $763 million.
- In 1978, Massachusetts's nonprofit arts industry, as measured by 669 cultural organizations:
- Spent a total of $114.5 million which led to a total economic impact of $311.6 million within the state and $15.5 million in the rest of New England.
- Provided 14,000 jobs.
- Benefited from 1.9 million hours of volunteer work.
- Had 11.3 million paid and unpaid admissions to events.
- Returned $5.4 million in federal income taxes and $2.1 million in state taxes.
- In 1978, Massachusetts's elementary and secondary school cultural programs spent $78.9 million resulting in an economic impact of $251 million.
- In 1979, audience attending Massachusetts' visual and performing arts events spend an additional $69.8 million over and above admission costs which led to a total economic impact of $184.4 million.
