Abstract:

This book contains the results of three major studies of the New England arts economy:

    1. The same study of New England's nonprofit arts industry in 1978, as measured by 2,830 cultural organizations originally reported in The Arts and the New England Economy published in 1980.

    2. A study of the economic impact of arts education spending in New England's primary and secondary schools.

    3. A study of the economic impact of audience spending in New England.

Highlights of the Study for Massachusetts:

  • The economic impact of direct and related spending by Massachusetts's nonprofit arts industry was $763 million.

  • In 1978, Massachusetts's nonprofit arts industry, as measured by 669 cultural organizations:

    • Spent a total of $114.5 million which led to a total economic impact of $311.6 million within the state and $15.5 million in the rest of New England.
    • Provided 14,000 jobs.
    • Benefited from 1.9 million hours of volunteer work.
    • Had 11.3 million paid and unpaid admissions to events.
    • Returned $5.4 million in federal income taxes and $2.1 million in state taxes.

  • In 1978, Massachusetts's elementary and secondary school cultural programs spent $78.9 million resulting in an economic impact of $251 million.

  • In 1979, audience attending Massachusetts' visual and performing arts events spend an additional $69.8 million over and above admission costs which led to a total economic impact of $184.4 million.
