This book contains the results of three major studies of the New England arts economy:
- The same study of New England's nonprofit arts industry in 1978, as measured by 2,830 cultural organizations originally reported in The Arts and the New England Economy published in 1980.
- A study of the economic impact of arts education spending in New England's primary and secondary schools.
- A study of the economic impact of audience spending in New England.
Highlights of the Study for Maine:
- The economic impact of direct and related spending by Maine's nonprofit arts industry was $86.2 million.
- In 1978, Maine's nonprofit arts industry, as measured by 601 cultural organizations:
- Spent a total of $13.1 million which led to a total economic impact of
$27.7 million within the state and $2.2 million in the rest of New England. - Provided 5,692 jobs.
- Benefited from 899,923 hours of volunteer work.
- Had 2.4 million paid and unpaid admissions to events.
- Returned $565,243 in federal income taxes and $112,395 in state taxes.

$11.8 million resulting in an economic impact of $27.9 million.
