This book contains the results of three major studies of the New England arts economy:
- The same study of New England's nonprofit arts industry in 1978, as measured by 2,830 cultural organizations orginally reported in The Arts and the New England Economy published in 1980.
- A study of the economic impact of arts education spending in New England's primary and secondary schools.
- A study of the economic impact of audience spending in New England.
Highlights of the Study for Rhode Island:
- The economic impact of direct and related spending by Rhode Island's nonprofit arts industry was $108.3 million.
- In 1978, Rhode Island's nonprofit arts industry, as measured by 287 cultural organizations:
- Spent a total of $22.2 million which led to a total economic impact of
$43.5 million within the state and $8.2 million in the rest of New England. - Provided 5,662 jobs.
- Benefited from 1.2 million hours of volunteer work.
- Had 2.5 million paid and unpaid admissions to events.
- Returned $1.3 million in federal income taxes and $248,525 in state taxes.

- In 1978, Rhode Island's elementary and secondary school cultural programs spent $12.1 million resulting in an economic impact of $30.7 million.
- In 1979, audience attending Rhode Island's visual and performing arts events spend an additional $10.9 million over and above admission costs which led to a total economic impact of $25.9 million.
