This book contains the results of three major studies of the New England arts economy:
- The same study of New England's nonprofit arts industry in 1978, as measured by 2,830 cultural organizations originally reported in The Arts and the New England Economy published in 1980.
- A study of the economic impact of arts education spending in New England's primary and secondary schools.
- A study of the economic impact of audience spending in New England.
Highlights of the Study for Vermont:
- The economic impact of direct and related spending by Vermont's nonprofit arts industry was $48.3 million.
- In 1978, Vermont's nonprofit arts industry, as measured by 414 cultural organizations:
- Spent a total of $8.9 million which led to a total economic impact of
$15.3 million within the state and $2.7 million in the rest of New England. - Provided 4,779 jobs.
- Benefited from 656,711 hours of volunteer work.
- Had 1.5 million paid and unpaid admissions to events.
- Returned $274,283 in federal income taxes and $66,798 in state taxes.

- In 1978, Vermont's elementary and secondary school cultural programs spent
$7.3 million resulting in an economic impact of $16.2 million.
- In 1979, audience attending Vermont's visual and performing arts events spend an additional $8.1 million over and above admission costs which led to a total economic impact of $14.1 million.
