This book contains the results of three major studies of the New England arts economy:
- The same study of New England's nonprofit arts industry in 1978, as measured by 2,830 cultural organizations orginally reported in The Arts and the New England Economy published in 1980.
- A study of the economic impact of arts education spending in New England's primary and secondary schools.
- A study of the economic impact of audience spending in New England.
Highlights of the Study for New Hampshire:
- The economic impact of direct and related spending by New Hampshire's nonprofit arts industry was $87.3 million.
- In 1978, New Hampshire's nonprofit arts industry, as measured by 286 cultural organizations:
- Spent a total of $12.9 million which led to a total economic impact of
$26.8 million within the state and $3.5 million in the rest of New England. - Provided 4,441 jobs.
- Benefited from 790,061 hours of volunteer work.
- Had 2.3 million paid and unpaid admissions to events.
- Returned $573,306 in federal income taxes.

- In 1978, New Hampshire's elementary and secondary school cultural programs spent $11.9 million resulting in an economic impact of $29.3 million.
- In 1979, audience attending New Hampshire's visual and performing arts events spend an additional $13.1 million over and above admission costs which led to a total economic impact of $27.7 million.
