This book contains the results of three major studies of the New England arts economy:
- The same study of New England's nonprofit arts industry in 1978, as measured by 2,830 cultural organizations originally reported in The Arts and the New England Economy published in 1980.
- A study of the economic impact of arts education spending in New England's primary and secondary schools.
- A study of the economic impact of audience spending in New England.

- The economic impact of direct and related spending by Connecticut's nonprofit arts industry was $331 million.
- In 1978, Connecticut's nonprofit arts industry, as measured by 574 cultural organizations:
- Spent a total of $41.1 million which led to a total economic impact of
$96.5 million within the state and $7 million in the rest of New England. - Provided 8,507 jobs.
- Benefited from 1.7 million hours of volunteer work.
- Had 5.6 million paid and unpaid admissions to events.
- Returned $1.9 million in federal income taxes and $154,230 in state taxes.
