The following study was designed to measure the economic impact of 34 arts agencies, organizations, festivals, shows, programs and events in the Oklahoma City economy for 1978. This is one of the first studies to measure the impact of festivals and shows.

Abstract:

The following study was designed to measure the economic impact of 34 arts agencies, organizations, festivals, shows, programs and events in the Oklahoma City economy for 1978. This is one of the first studies to measure the impact of festivals and shows. Total attendance for performance and festivals: 1,329,243; OKC area 84.3% and out-of-area 15.7%. Festivals accounted for 38.1% of total attendance. Labor force: 121 full-time (12 of these were CETA positions), 126 part-time, 5,629 volunteers, 113,504 hours volunteered, 791 additional full-time jobs were created in the local economy in order to support the arts industry demand for resources, goods and services. Festivals and shows counted for 28.3% of the 791 additional jobs.

Arts industry and patron expenditures:

(a) Total expenditures (local and non-local) by arts institutions, agencies,
     festivals and shows: $4,934,727 (festivals and shows 11.3%).

    Total direct local expenditures by the arts industry, employees of the arts
    industry, patrons, guest artists and audiences: $12,176,656 (festivals 28.3%).

    Total secondary (indirect) expenditures in the local economy due to
    increased business purchases and increased business volume: $21,621,478
    (festivals 28.3%).

    Grand total expenditures resulting from both direct and secondary impacts:
    $33,798,134 (festivals 28.3%).

    Estimated sales tax paid to local governments as a result of direct and
    secondary expenditures: $669,203 (festivals 28.3%). (Executive Summary)
