Summary:

The following study was designed to measure the economic impact of 34 arts agencies, organizations, festivals, shows, programs and events in the Oklahoma City economy for 1981. This is one of the first studies to measure the impact of festivals. Total attendance for performances and festivals: 1,677,136; OKC area 64.1% and out-of-area 35.9%. Festivals accounted for 23.9% of total attendance. Labor force: 220 full-time (1 of these is a CETA position). 1,043 part-time, 6,854 volunteers, 128, 150 hours volunteered 1,352 additional full-time jobs were created in the local economy in order to support the arts industry demand for resources, goods and services. Festivals accounted for 24.9% of the 1,352 additional jobs.

Abstract:

Arts industry and patron expenditures: Total expenditures (local and-non local) reported by the arts industry (institutions, agencies and festivals), according to accounting records: $5,720,993 (festivals 14.5%). Total direct local expenditures by the arts industry firms, employees of the arts industry, patrons, guest artists and audiences: $20,800,552 (festivals 24.9%). Total secondary (indirect) expenditures in the local economy due to increased business volume and increased business purchases, $36,934,500. Grand total expenditures resulting from both direct and secondary impacts: $57,735,052 (festivals 24.9%). Estimated sales tax paid to local governments as a result of direct and secondary expenditures: $1,143,154 (festivals 24.9%). (Executive Summary).
