Abstract:

During 1981 and 1982 faculty and graduate students at The University of Iowa investigated the economic impact of arts activity in Iowa, by measuring both direct and indirect effects of the activity of individual artists and arts organizations. This technical report presents information about similar studies done in other states and provides a review of published information in the arts in Iowa. The report then discusses methods of determining economic impact, including survey-based methods and the use of economic models. It concludes by explaining the methods used in Iowa's study. Appended are reproductions of the survey forms that were utilized to gather information about arts activities.

This report provides detailed information about Iowa's study that is not available in the final report on this project to the Arts Council. However, the reader should turn to that final report to learn the results of applying the impact methodology to the Iowa Arts sector. That report, and a second technical report on arts activity and support in Iowa, is available from the Institute of the Iowa Arts Council.
