The Economic Functions of Nonprofit Enterprise: The Case of Art Museums

Author: Gassler, Robert Scott and Grace, Robin

Publication Year: 1979

Media Type: Report

Summary:

Abstract:

The author examines the economic functions of art museums. The author proposes an expanded taxonomy of economic functions for nonprofit enterprises, building on Musgrave's classification of fiscal policies. The activities of art museums are described in terms of this taxonomy, and comparisons are made to libraries, churches, and other nonprofit enterprises. The author argues that because of the nature and variety of the economic functions they perform, the activities of nonprofit enterprises cannot be evaluated using present economic criteria.
