Abstract:

This directory provides the student with a comprehensive listing of internship opportunities in the nation's capital. Washington, DC continues to serve as a haven for students nationwide who seek an off-campus or independent work-learning experience in a culture-rich city.

The Directory of Washington Internships is designed primarily for undergraduate and graduate students as a source of basic internship information, but it also lists a few DC-based programs geared specifically toward high school students.

The National Society for Internships and Experiential Education also publishes this directory for directors of internship programs interested in how other programs are designed; for faculty members aware of the valuable experiences available to their students through internships; and for educators, government officials, business executives and others interested in the learning potential outside the classroom.

Internship opportunities vary considerably. Most of the programs in this directory are flexible, allowing the student to plan the experience according to his or her schedule -- whether it be in conjunction with an academic semester, a quarter system, the January or summer term, or a completely independent arrangement.

This directory contains entries for approximately 200 organizations in Washington, D.C. that accept student interns during specified academic terms or year-round. The entries are divided into general fields of interest (see Table of Contents for the categories). Because opportunities such as those listed in this directory defy simple categorization into fields be sure to see the cross-references provided on the divider pages between sections.

Also included is a Clearinghouse section which lists central organizations that refer or place students into a variety of agencies in Washington. These centralized programs - whether based at individual colleges and universities or at an independent organization - help students from institutions all over the U.S. to find internships related to their interests.

Individual program entries include the organization's or sponsoring agency's name, address, phone number, contact person, number of interns per term or per year, the time period (fall, winter, spring, summer), program design, skills needed, and the benefits of such an experience. If you are interested in a particular program, contact the sponsoring agency directly. When one or more of these categories of information is omitted in a particular entry, the sponsoring agency did not provide the information. Programs list a stipend only when one was specified by the host agency or organization. Most sponsoring agencies do not play a major role in assisting the student in locating housing accommodations. This directory includes an up-to-date section on housing possibilities on pages 119-122.
