Abstract:

This edition includes 5,865 entries and is intended to help you use the resources and services of the many organizations that preserve and disseminate knowledge about our past. Full listings include the name and mailing address of an institution, its telephone number, the year it was founded, and the name of the paid director or elected officer to whom mail should be addressed. Then follows the number of members, paid and part-time employees, and volunteer staff members. If the institution publishes a periodical, its title appears on the following line. Finally, there is a listing of the institution's major programs, and the time period of its collections. Historic preservation appears for the first time as a program category.

Throughout the Directory, an open-diamond symbol appears before the name of the organization considered most likely to be able to answer questions about historical activity in the state or province as a whole. In addition to the general alphabetical index, we have included a special interest index that serves as a key to the major fields of interest of each organization. . . . . an index of National Park Service historical properties, and branch listings of the National Archives and Records Service. (p. v-vi).
