Both are a direct result of the recommendations submitted by the Task Force on Hispanic American Arts following its work of more than two years, from 1978 to 1980, to determine in what ways those arts can be strengthened. The work of the Task Force was carried out under the auspices of the National Endowment for the Arts.

The Directory of Hispanic American Arts Organizations contains the names of 173 organizations offering programs and services in the arts and other endeavors to Hispanic American communities in the . This publication and its companion, the Directory of Funding Sources for the Arts and Artists, are funded with a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Both are a direct result of the recommendations submitted by the Task Force on Hispanic American Arts following its work of more than two years, from 1978 to 1980, to determine in what ways those arts can be strengthened. The work of the Task Force was carried out under the auspices of the National Endowment for the Arts.

The arts organizations are separated by state and listed alphabetically by city, and numbered consecutively in the text. Pertinent data is included under each organization. The index is divided into two parts: a list of organizations and the programs and services provided by the organization. Each organization is identified by number only in the second part of the index and can be easily identified in the first part. The programs and services are included under the appropriate subheading listed alphabetically, such as Arts. A list of publications is included in the final section.

The data in the directory was compiled from a number of sources. A preliminary list of organizations was compiled during the meetings held by the Task Force in various parts of the country and through regional inquiries conducted under its auspices. Letters were sent to all the known organizations across the country requesting information on their programs and services. From all of the responses a preliminary list of entries was put together in 1981. The entire list was reviewed and revised in the spring of 1982.

Jacinto Quirarte, project director and Maria Elena Gonzalez-Rich, project coordinator, worked on the two year project collating and organizing the material.

This directory is designed to assist those who wish to set up information networks between organizations and individuals. In this way, the sharing of experience and expertise will strengthen Hispanic American arts in general and the programs and services provided to the community in particular. We, at the Research Center for the Arts and Humanities, hope that it will be useful to those who consult it.
