The descriptions of collections and services provided by institutions throughout the and Canada are designed to aid faculty, curators, librarians, scholars, students, researchers, and the general public in locating and using both print and nonprint materials in the fine arts.

The Directory includes approximately 1,300 listings, representing libraries, museums, galleries, art schools, colleges and universities. The editors have excluded institutions such as film libraries and historical societies, as these sources are indexed in existing or forthcoming directories. (Preface, p. ix). Visual resource collections may contain slides, photographs, and such audiovisual materials as videos, films, and filmstrips.
