Abstract:
The New York State Department of Health regulates hospital and related services. It is also responsible for leisure time activities, nutrition, nursing services, cleanliness and safety, medical care, rehabilitation therapies, social work, and physical facilities in all nursing homes and other long term care institutions.
Art and art therapy services are part of the Leisure Time Activities Program in nursing homes. The Activities Program is required by federal and state regulations, and is reimbursable. It is defined as a planned schedule of recreational, social and purposeful activity for nursing home patients designed to make their life more meaningful, to stimulate and support the desire to use their physical and mental capabilities to their fullest extent, to enable them to maintain a sense of usefulness and self-respect, but not specifically designed to correct or remedy any disability. The program is not considered to be therapy; it is meant to help the patients adapt well to their environment. (p. 45)
