Abstract:

Paper presented at a meeting on the development of cultural policies in Europe held in Helsinki, Finland from December 8-12, 1980 by the Finnish National Commission for UNESCO in cooperation with UNESCO under the Participation Programme.

A discussion of a survey conducted among countries in Europe on the perceived role and relevance of the 32 recommendations and concepts adopted by EUROCULT 1972 and to explore at the same time the past, present and future development of cultural life and cultural policies. Included in the survey was an inventory concerning Unesco activities since 1972 in the field of cultural development. The author makes the following concluding remarks: All in all the responses were positive in their attitude to EUROCULT 1972. It is obvious that cultural development and the development of cultural policies in Europe has followed rather well the path outlined in the EUROCULT discussions. Similarly it is obvious that the recommendations and basic concepts of EUROCULT have influenced the formulation of cultural policies in the European Region Member States. (p. 63)
