The Critical Roles of University-Sponsored Internships for Entry into the Professional Music Business: A Report of a National Survey

Summary:

Abstract:

The purpose of the survey reported here was to explore the perceptions and methodologies of various job-seeking strategies and, to a lesser degree, the salary structure of those currently employed in the music industry.

Increasingly, higher education is playing a role in providing skilled, entry-level employees to the recorded music industry, a $38 billion industry worldwide. In the United States, the Music and Entertainment Industry Educators Association recognized 33 four-year programs offering degrees in music business, and another 40 institutions offering limited music business courses. Virtually every four-year program offers its students an opportunity to intern in the industry. Internships usual consist of 15 to 40 hours per week of on-the-job-training by one or more professionals. It is becoming more critical to participate in a music industry internship as, in this competitive business, an education is likely not enough for entry into the field.  Experience is required and an internship is viewed as essential.
