Abstract:

Prepared by Arthur Young, Inc. for the Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance. In late 1980, The Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance (GPCA) and Arthur Young & Company established the framework for a survey which was intended to accomplish the following objectives: Determine the Philadelphia non-profit cultural community's share of total contributions provided by the greater Philadelphia corporate sector in assessing the position of the cultural community in relation to other recipients of business and professional resources. Provide a current financial profile of Philadelphia's non-profit cultural community, highlighting sources of funding and current and projected expenditure levels, so as to provide information reflective of the cultural community's financial needs. Enumerate corporate policies and considerations in determining the direction of contributions so that the cultural community can better understand decision criteria for support from the corporate sector. Survey findings are presented in enclosed Tables 1 through 6. Highlights of data included therein are as follows:

Table 1. Profile of survey participants. Responding corporations were principally those considered to be major business establishments in the greater Philadelphia area. Cultural organizations participating in the survey were considered representative of the various types of cultural activities and higher revenue GPCA institutional members.

Table 2. Cultural community sources of support. For the most recently completed accounting year, the cultural community received approximately 9 percent of its total support from corporations and corporate foundations, 15 percent from government agencies, 62 percent from self-generated earnings and 14 percent from private and other contribtions. Table 2-A further demonstrates the percentage allocation of corporate support by type of cultural organization.

Table 3. Corporate support by cultural organization revenue level. This table summarizes the allocation of corporate support by cultural organization revenue level.

Table 4. Cultural community expenditure levels. Responding organizations reported expenditure levels of approximately $62,580,000 during the most recently completed year and project current year expenditures to increase by 16.7 percent to approximately $73,040,000. Information is presented in total and by type of cultural organization.

Table 5. Cultural community share of total corporate contributions. Responding corporations report that approximately nine and one-half percent of total charitable contributions are provided to the Philadelphia non-profit cultural community. This information is provided by groupings of participating corporations, and by standard industrial classifications.

Table 6. Corporate contribution policies and considerations. Of the 25 responding corporations, 21 answered the survey question as to policies and considerations in determining the direction of contributions and support. This table summarizes policies and considerations which appeared to be most prominent among survey respondents and may aid the cultural community in better understanding decision criteria for support from the corporate sector.
