Abstract:

Description of State Department Arts in Education Programs:

Each of the states in the Coalition currently are in the process of exploring or establishing comprehensive plans to encourage and assist local school districts to develop comprehensive arts in education programs.

The descriptions which are in the form of responses include:

    1. the establishment of the arts as a priority by the chief state school office and the endorsement by the State Board of Education;
    2. the planning process, the individuals or agencies involved;
    3. the objectives, characteristics and implementation of the plan;
    4. a description of the arts in education program; and
    5. publications and resource personnel available for use by other states.

The questions appear only in the Arizona description to conserve space and necessity of re-reading the questions.

Some of the states have completed plans that were too extensive to be included with this publication. They are available from the Departments of Education in California, Massachusetts, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Each of the state programs are constantly changing and expanding so these descriptions are updated regularly. (p. 11)
