The Coming Crisis in Public Higher Education: Implications for the Arts

Author: Urice, John K.

Publication Year:

Media Type: Periodical (article)

Summary:

Abstract:

In this issues closing essay, the author cautions readers that the structure and nature of public higher education is likely to change, and discusses the effect that this will have on the arts. The primary points to such claims are:

  • perceived faculty disenfranchisement;
  • demands for increased institutional accountability; and
  • the leadership crisis.

The author writes that the implications for the arts exist because the academic arts are:

  • expensive;
  • often are regarded as peripheral in comprehensive universalities; and
  • not perceived to be relevant in the current climate of accountability.

The authors call-to-action to faculty, artists, and university administrators are that they must be prepared to defend the legitimacy, appropriateness, and essential centrality of the academic arts.
