Abstract:

This report examines the economic impact of cultural institutions on their communities. An approach developed in a pilot project in Baltimore in 1976 has been applied to follow-up studies in six other U.S. cities.

This chapter of the report examines the application of economic impact analysis in Columbus, Ohio and describes its institutions, economy, and broader cultural community. The impact of six local arts and cultural institutions on the local economy in 1977-78 are estimated:

Total direct economic effect: $ 6,336,821.
Secondary economic effect:
     1) Business volume: $10,539,968. 
     2) Personal income: $4,044,301.
Full-time jobs: 574.
Local government revenues: $381,251.
Local government costs: $.245,349.
