Abstract:

This is a report summarizing the deliberations of participants at the American Assembly meeting on November 13, 1998. It provides a wide range of findings about current and potential connections between the not-for-profit and for-profits arts.

The report outlines recommended steps to foster future connections including research, dialogue and communication, and funding experiments and initiatives. The range of potential projects are defined. These include cultural preservation and community development projects to joint ventures in theater and cable television. New connections will also be inspired by the rising importance of new technologies, the commerce of information, and a massive need for artistic content in the entertainment and high-technology industries.

Factors that could constrain future cross-sector connections and criteria for their successful development are discussed. The findings suggest that a cross-sector connection should be expanded to benefit both sectors and for the arts to serve the public purpose. However, any collaboration should not displace the nonprofits mission-driven objectives nor change the for-profits objectives.
