In 1974, Jean Kennedy Smith founded Very Special Arts to provide people with disabilities opportunities for integration and self-expression through drama, dance, music, creative writing and the visual arts. Now, in a series of candid and revealing interviews conducted by Smith and edited by George Plimpton, sixteen artists talk about their lives - and discuss how art has made a difference to them.

The artists profiled range from a guitarist who plays with his feet to a photographer with a visual impairment who sees through his camera. Some are paralyzed or have cerebral palsy; others are blind or deaf. Some have had disabilities since birth; for others, accidents or illnesses later in life have resulted in a disability. In every case, they have had to find a way of realizing their dreams in a world that is largely indifferent to their situations. Here are stories of pain endured and obstacles overcome, of small satisfactions and breakthrough successes - a moving collection of voices raised in celebration of art and the human spirit.
