Summary:

Casebook is a handsome presentation by Neal-Schuman Publishers. It is the second in a series edited by William Coleman. The first is Grants in the Humanities: A Scholar's Guide to Funding Sources. This reviewer has not seen the earlier work, but could conceive of its usefulness if it achieves the same level of order, professionalism, and analysis as the Casebook.

Abstract:

Review by Brann J. Wry of the book, A Casebook of Grants Proposals in the Humanities [New York, NY: Neal-Schuman Publishers, 1982, 248 p.].

The editors of Casebook have written this working digest almost in recipe book style, blending advice from their experiences with observations on how grants are won. This combination of knowledgeable advice with strategic pointers adds to one's arsenal of weapons to fight the good fight for grants in the non-profit sector. It is particularly welcome, since so many academicians are filled with dyanamic ideas, backed by little or no training in the vagaries of funding. Whether the training can be garnered in the space of one casebook is questionable, but from the careful work presented the truly interested academic grant seeker can make a valiant start on the way to successful proposal writing.

Anyone truly concerned about the changing climate nationally toward funding humanistic endeavors will have to perfect writing and application skills in the face of greater competition for fewer dollars and A Casebook of Grants Proposals in the Humanities makes a welcome, sensible and highly informative companion for the humanist to use in charting a course in a sea of funding sources.
