Abstract:

Paper presented at Conference on the Economic Impact of the Arts, sponsored by Cornell University, Graduate School of Business and Public Administration, held in Ithaca, New York, May 27-28, 1981.

Much is being said about the need for expanded corporate support to offset cutbacks in public funding, but little attention is being accorded the many creative business initiatives already in place. It is inaccurate and unfair to assume that business interest in the arts has been motivated by economic guilt or by challenges from the public sector. Business has its own reasons for supporting the arts, and they differ substantially from those of the public sector. As support for the arts shifts back to the private sector, these business initiatives and the motivations behind them will emerge more clearly. Three initiatives instituted in the city of Seattle, Washington, may serve as examples. (p. 82-83)
